Privacy Policy

1. Privacy Policy

Last updated: 3rd September 2026

The University of Cape Town Australian Trust (ABN 16 316 957 875), "the Trust", "we", "us") is committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

What we collect

We collect personal information you give us directly, including:

  • Your name and email address, when you use the contact form or sign up to our mailing list
  • Your name, contact and payment details, when you make a donation
  • General technical information about your visit to this site (see Cookies and analytics below)

Donations and payment processing

Donations made through this site are processed by GiveNow (givenow.com.au), an independent third-party payment platform. GiveNow collects and handles your payment details directly — we do not see or store your credit card or bank information. GiveNow passes us the donor information needed to issue a receipt and keep an accurate record of your gift. GiveNow's own privacy policy governs how it handles your payment information.

Why we collect and use your information

We use your personal information to:

  • Process and receipt your donation, and meet our tax and ACNC record-keeping obligations
  • Send you Trust news, newsletters and event invitations, where you've asked to receive them (you can unsubscribe at any time)
  • Maintain an accurate record of our alumni, donors and supporters
  • Organise and administer events

Disclosure to the University of Cape Town (including overseas)

The Trust exists to support the University of Cape Town (UCT) and its alumni community. Where relevant, we share your name and contact details with UCT's Development and Alumni Department (DAD) in South Africa, so that your record as a UCT alumnus, donor or supporter can be maintained centrally in UCT's Devman database alongside your history with the University.

This means your personal information may be disclosed and stored outside Australia, in South Africa. By providing your information to us, you consent to this overseas disclosure. If you do not want your details shared with UCT in South Africa, contact us at info@ucttrust.org.au and we will keep your information within Australia to the extent that doing so still allows us to process your donation or request.

We do not sell your personal information to anyone, and we do not disclose it to any other third party except as described in this policy or as required by law.

Access and correction

You can ask us for access to the personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct it, by contacting us at info@ucttrust.org.au. We will respond within a reasonable time.

3. Complaints Handling Policy

Complaints Handling Policy

Last updated: 3 September 2026

The University of Cape Town Australian Trust welcomes feedback and takes complaints seriously, in line with our obligations as a charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).

How to make a complaint

Email info@ucttrust.org.au with "Complaint" in the subject line, including as much detail as you can (what happened, when, and what outcome you're seeking).

What happens next

  • We will acknowledge your complaint within  5 business days.
  • A director or the Trust Manager will review the matter and may contact you for more information.
  • We aim to resolve complaints within  20 business days and will let you know the outcome in writing.

Privacy complaints

If your complaint relates to how we've handled your personal information, see also our Privacy Policy. You can escalate an unresolved privacy complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).

Escalation

If you're not satisfied with how we've handled your complaint, you can raise it with the ACNC (acnc.gov.au), which regulates registered charities in Australia.

No retaliation

We will not treat you unfairly for raising a genuine complaint.

4. Donation / Refund Policy

Donation Policy

Last updated: 3rd September 2026

How donations are processed

Donations made through this site are processed securely by GiveNow (givenow.com.au), an independent third-party donation platform. GiveNow handles all payment details; the Trust does not receive or store your card information.

Tax deductibility

The University of Cape Town Australian Trust is endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient. Donations of $2 or more are tax-deductible for Australian taxpayers. A receipt suitable for tax purposes will be issued for every donation.

Use of funds

Donations support scholarships, bursaries and student-led programs at the University of Cape Town, as described elsewhere on this site.

Errors and refunds

If you believe a donation was made in error (for example, a duplicate transaction or incorrect amount), contact us at info@ucttrust.org.au within 14 days and we will work with GiveNow to arrange a refund where appropriate. Refunds may take GiveNow's own processing time and, in some cases, transaction fees already incurred may not be refundable.

Recurring donations

If you've set up a recurring donation, you can cancel it at any time by contacting us or through GiveNow directly.
